Ship Building.

Build.

From HMS Ark Royal to Royal Research Ship (RRS) Sir David Attenborough, Cammell Laird knows what it takes to deliver vessels of vital national importance.

Cammell Laird, part of the APCL Group, has played a strategic role in UK shipbuilding for the past 200 years, with recent projects including block builds for the Aircraft Carrier Alliance and critical units of the Astute class of nuclear submarines.

Today Cammell Laird and the wider APCL Group are delivering units for the Dreadnought class of nuclear submarines and units for HMS Belfast Ship 3 and HMS Birmingham Ship 4 of the new Type 26 class of frigates. These programmes are being delivered on behalf of BAE.

Cammell Laird is proud of its recent ferry projects which include the construction of the Red Kestrel on behalf of Red Funnel, the Sound of Seil and Sound of Soay for Western Ferries and the Strangford II for Strangford Ferries.

Our experienced and highly knowledgeable technical team of naval architects, marine engineers, electrical engineers and marine design draftsmen provide the expertise to deliver the most complex of shipbuilding projects from concept design to completion.

Mersey Ferry Build Project.

Cammell Laird is delighted to be building the first Mersey Ferry to be built in 60 years.

The new ferry will bear the hull number 1,395 - being the 1,395th ship built at the facility. This first-generation ferry will be the 16th Mersey Ferry to be built at the facility since 1836.

The new ferry has been designed by in-house Cammell Laird naval architects and will be constructed by the facility’s experienced and highly knowledgeable technical team of marine engineers, electrical engineers and marine design draftsmen, all of whom have the expertise to deliver the most complex of shipbuilding projects from concept design to completion.

25 apprentices will be working on this project and developing vital shipbuilding skills alongside the rest of Cammell Laird’s highly skilled workforce. Cammell Laird is extremely proud that 171 apprentices are currently in training throughout the business.

Cammell Laird looks forward to completing the construction of this new Mersey Ferry – a vessel which will further cement the facility’s place in the rich history of the Mersey, but equally, in its future too.
